Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the poornima of the Shravan/sawan month of the Hindu calendar. Usually this falls in the month of august every year.

This auspicious day is celebrated in a special way. The speciality of this festival is that it is prominently based on tying a sacred thread called the Raksha Sutra or Rakhi on the right hand's wrist of their brother.

The significance of this day is that the sisters pray for the wellbeing of their brothers which is signified by the tying of the Raksha Sutra and the brothers in return of the prayers promise to protect their sisters from all the evil on the earth throughout their lifetime, till their last breadth. This promise is signified by giving their sisters a return gift.

Sisters after waking up in the morning take bath and offer prayers to God for their brothers. They keep fast till they meet and tie Rakhi to their brother. The procedure follows step by step. Firstly the sisters perform an aarti of their brothers, then they apply tilak on their forehead and then tie the Rakhi. After the sisters have tied Rakhi, the brothers give a token of love in the form of return gift with the promise of protecting their sisters always.

As now a days mostly the siblings do not stay together at the same place sisters send their Rakhis to their brothers through post. The trend is still further changing and instead of sending the physical Rakhis women are preferring to send e-rakhi or online rakhi.
