Panchmarhi is a hill town situated on high plateau of the Satpura mountain range in Madhya Pradesh. Panchmarhi gets overcrowded during months October to November and February to March. In this article the various caves, wild life and tourists spots will be brought into light.

Green town Panchmarhi


Panchmarhi was previously known as "Panchmadhi" which means five caves. The five caves are popularly known as the caves of the Pandavas. It is believed that during the period of their exile the Pandavas had lived in these caves for a year. In most of times of the year Panchmarhi remains overcasted with clouds. It is visited by tourists for open space, calm atmosphere, trekking and pilgrimage purpose. Panchmarhi Satpura forest has many variety of trees like mangoes, bamboos, Sal, Teak, Mahua, etc. There are many species of ferns and wild floweres that make Panchmarhi overwhelmingly beautiful. The quiet, calm and sombre environment brings peace and happiness to the mind and body. Parchmarhi is not only surrounded by forests and greenery but has a lot of natural waterfalls and fountains.

Priyadarshani point

This is the point from where the natural beauty and landscape can be viewed and enjoyed. The charming beauty of Panchmarhi can be admired and is enchanting.

Dhupgarh

It is situated at a height of 4429 feet on the Satpura mountains. This is the highest point on the Satpura mountains. It is about 10 kms from Panchmarhi. The road to Dhupgarh is surrounded by forests. Jeeps take tourists to this point. Tourists can admire the beauty of sunrise and sunset from this point. Besides, they can see animals like deer, bears, Sambhar, Leopards, Peacocks, various small birds, etc.

Jata Shankar cave

It is special attraction for tourists and pilgrims. Stalagmite stones have knitted together to look like matted hair of Shiva. Near the cave is the Jata Shankar temple. Another cave called Harper's cave is near the Jata Shankar temple.

Parvati cave

It is located on the right side while heading towards the Gupta Mahadev cave. It is situated in the inside of forest. Tourists should beware of wild animals and bees while going there.

Gupta Mahadev cave

In the Gupta Mahadev cave there is a Shiva temple. It is situated at the foot of the Mahadev hill.

Mahadev cave

This is located near the Gupta Mahadev cave. There is an idol of Lord Shiva kept there. Two more caves dedicated to Lord Shiva is located nearby. Maha Shivratri is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm in the cave. Tourists and pilgrims visit the Mahadev cave during the Maha Shivratri celebration.
Besides, Moradeo cave is also located there. In this cave ancient art and painting can be found inside.

Waterfalls and Fountains

Bee falls, Rajat falls, Dutches falls, Little falls, etc are the beautiful falls which are visited by tourists.

Natural reservoir

There is a natural reservoir surrounded by the hills located in the Satpura National Park. To view the Bee falls one has buy a ticket to get there.

Satpura National Park

Satpura National Park is spread over an area of approximately 274 sq.km. covered by trees like bamboos, Sal, Teak, etc. Wild animals like Bisons, Panther, Tigers, Deer, Peacocks, Birds and snakes are found here. This Park is a treasure place for animal lovers.

Panchmarhi

This is a great place for tourists for relaxation with boating facility provided.There are many other places to visit like Bison Lodge which is now a museum for collection for Flora and Fauna, Chauragarh temple, etc.

How to Reach Panchmarhi


1. By Road.
Panchmarhi can be reached by road. Bhopal is approximately 200 kms luxury buses run frequently. Panchmarhi is 250 kms from Jabalpur.

2. By Rail.
Panchmarhi can be reached by rail from Pipariya. Pipariya is approximately 50-54 kms from Panchmarhi on Mumbai-Howrah route(Main line).

3. By Air.
Nearest Airport is Bhopal, approximately 200 kms from Panchmarhi.

The People, Climate, Religion/Culture of Panchmarhi


The people of Madhya Pradesh are amiable, fun loving and great lovers of sweet. The people residing in the State belong to the different religions and cultures. The State has magnificient forts, forests reserves and the carvings in the caves and temple are worth admiration. The climate of Panchmarhi is humid, cool and breezy in most of the time in year. The winters are pleasant and dry while the summers are hot. The monsoons are raining and the forests look lush green and beautiful. There is a mix of peopl of all the communities. There are Hindus, Rajputs, Parsis, Jains, Christians, Muslims, etc.
There are about 40% of the tribals residing in Madhya Pradesh. Most of them elong to the tribes called Gonds, oraons, bhils, kartuni, etc. The language spoken are Hindi, English, Urdu, Marathi, Bhili, Gujrati, Kuruk, Nahali, etc. The culture followed is basically Hindu-based, though there may be variations

Hello friend,

you have posted very nice information about Panchmarhi. I have visited this place twice and simply I love to stay here. Cost wise it is also very cheap as compare to other hill station.Other than temples there are so many places which everyone like to visit.In recent years this will become a best honeymoon place cause it is very safe for young couples.
