The Kite festival

The kite flying festival is held on 14th January or Makar Sankranti(the day when the Sun transits into the northern hemisphere). The festival is held for three days in Jaipur's polo ground. The festival is initiated by a colorful opening ceremony depicting Rajasthan's folk dance and music. Afterwards the kite festival is initiated and all the eyes turn up to the sky. Kite flying is done in two segments- the kite flying competition and the kite flying exhibition.
In the kite flying competition, the various competitors try to outwit each other by showing their prowess and talents in flying kites. The winners of the comptetion are awarded with trophies and certificates. People do take this in a highly competitive spirit as everyone wants to get the trophy from this world famous festival.

In the exhibition however there is less completion and hence people are more concerned about show casing different designs and concepts of kites.
On the third and the final day of the festival, the venue is shifted from the open plains of the Polo ground to the majestic field of Umaid Bhawan Palace. Here the finals of the Kite flying festival is held as well as the various awards are distributed.
