Biography of Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan: Vasundhara Raje

Personal Life


Current Chief Ministerial candidate from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Smt. Vasundhara Raje was born on 8 March 1953 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. She belongs to Scindia royal Maratha family and hold a great innate wisdom. Maharaja Jivaji Rao Scindia, was the father of former Chief minister of Rajasthan. She has completed her schooling at Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu and Graduation from University of Mumbai with Honors in Economics and Political Science. Her son Dushyant Singh was elected to the Lok Sabha from Jhalawar. After getting married to Mr. Hemant Singh, her relations with Rajasthan began as an active member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Political Career


At downy age, she lost her father but her mother gave a strong support in every manner. She got the membership of 8th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in 1985 and became Vice-President of Yuva Morcha BJP in Rajasthan. After that, she got the membership of Parliament from 1989 to 2003 for 9th,10th,11th,12th, 13th Lok Sabha. She also worked as member of National Executive in Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and as a Vice-President for BJP, Rajasthan in 1987. In 1991-96, she worked in Ministries of Power, Consultative Committees, Environment and Tourism, Science and Technology. In 1997, she was nominated for Joint Secretary in BJP Parliamentary Party.

She was involved in External Affairs department as Union Minister of State in 1998-99. She had also worked in Department of Personnel and Training, Department of Pensions and Pensioners' Welfare in the Ministry of Personnel, Department of Atomic Energy and Department of Space from 1999 to 2001. She was the president from BJP at the elction of 2003 in Rajasthan Preceded by Mr. Ashok Gehlot. Smt Vasundhara Raje took oath five times as a Minister of State with Independent Charge.

In the elections of 2008, BJP got 78 seats out of 200 member State Assembly in Rajasthan. It was just difference of 18 seats with Congress party's tally of 96 seats. As a 'Leader of Opposition', she worked well in Rajasthan for BJP. She had worked as National General Secretary in Bhartiya Janta Party and again took the position of 'Leader of Opposition' in Rajasthan Legislative Assembly. She was 22nd and 1st woman Chief Minister of Rajasthan during 8 December 2003-11 December 2008.

As the Chief minister of Rajasthan, she visted in Switzerland, USA and also have visited in Columbia, Singapore as Minister of State. She organized "Suraj Sankalp Yatra" for 2013 Election campaign. It was started from Charbhujaji Mandir on April 4, 2013. Aim of "Suraj Sankalp Yatra" was to know about the public feeling, their requirements, their need through over 200 public meetings. She wants to recover the common issues like unemployment, poverty, corruption and crime completely from Rajasthan. This yatra was divided into 7 phases: Ajmer, Bikaner, Jaipur,Udaipur, Kota, Bharatpur and Jodhpur.

She had been chosen three times as a member of Legislature, following details are:

  • For 8th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in between 1985-89

  • For 12th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in between 2003 - 2008

  • For 13th Rajasthan Legislative Assembly in 2008 onwards


Member of Parliament


She had been chosen Five times as a member of Parliament, following details are:

  • For 9th Lok Sabha in between 1989-91

  • For 10th Lok Sabha in between 1991-96

  • For 11th Lok Sabha in between 1996-98

  • For 12th Lok Sabha in between 1998-99

  • For 13th Lok Sabha in between 1999-2003
