History of Nandankanan Zoological Park at Bhubaneswar, Odisha
The Nandankanan Zoological Park was established in the year 1960 at the capital Bhubaneswar of Odisha. This is a very famous Zoo in Odisha and has a good botanical garden inside. This Zoo was opened for the public visits in the year 1979 and it became the first Zoo in India which joined in World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The Zoo is maintained by the Forest service of Odisha government. The location and atmosphere of this Zoo attracts the people from various states of India and also other countries. The Zoo has a huge lake called "Kanjia Lake" which has a surrounding area of about 54 hectares. The Kanjia lake is the source of water for providing pure water for the whole family of all animals in the Zoo. The total area of the Zoo is about 400 hectares. The survey report says that approximately 2 million people are visiting this Zoo every year from various places across the globe. This Zoo also generates more funds by the fee collection and it is sufficient to maintain the animals and birds in the Zoo. The other species of animals like the Asiatic lions, Sangai liontailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Indian pangolin and mouse deer attracts a large number of people who visit this Zoo. The Nandankanan Zoological Park also has very large home for variety of fishes in 34 different aquariums. The education programees are also being conducted in this Zoo to teach about the various kinds of animals, water fishes and birds. The Zoo school is available inside the zoo.
