About the National Parks of Assam


Assam is a beautiful state which is situated in the north eastern part of the India. There are a number of famous places in Assam. Among the places, national parks are the main attraction in this state. Famous parks of Assam are Kaziranga National Park, Manas National park, Orang National Park, Dibru-Saikhowa National Park, Nameri National Park and it also famous for wildlife parks. These parks are develops the natural beauty of Assam.

Kaziranga National Park of Assam


Kaziranga National ParkThe Kaziranga Park is one of the oldest National parks in Assam. Historically the name, Kaziranga, was derived from the Karbi word Kajir-a-rang, which means "the village of Kajir". Among the Karbis, Kajir is a common name for a girl child, and it was believed that Kajir is a woman name who ruled here in ancient time. This park is very popular for its natural beauty and wildlife thrilling. The park covers an area of 430 Sq kms along the river Brahmputra. Kaziranga National Park lies in Golaghat District and partly in Nagaon District of Assam. The park was declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its quality natural environment. The most attraction of this park is the Indian one horned rhinoceros, which can reach a height of over two meters and weight more than two tones. There are above 1000 rhinos in this reserve. The landscape of Kaziranga is of sheer forest, tall elephant grass, rugged reeds, marshes & shallow pools. Kaziranga has been declared as National Park in 1974. This park is very famous for its wild life inhabitation including many species of rhinoceroses, as well as many animals, including elephant, Indian bison, Swamp deer, Samber, Hog deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard, Leopard cat,Jungle cat, hog badger, Capped langur, Hoolock gibbon, Jackal, Goose, Hornbills, lbis, Cormorants, Egret, Heron Fishing Eagle etc and numerous bird species. Kaziranga is one of the largest Protected Areas in India and one of the most significant conserved forest areas on the earth. Kaziranga was originally established as a reserved forest in 1908. The birds are beautiful attraction of this park. The Kaziranga National Park supports a rich and varied bird life. In addition to numerous species of resident birds it serves as the winter visiting ground to many migratory birds. So, the park has also been identified as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The total park area is divided into four ranges under the range forest officers named Burapahar, Baguri, Central, and Eastern. Today, Kaziranga is one of the richest, most picturesque wildlife habitats of southern Asia. Kaziranga National Park is one of the most famous travel attractions of North East India. Another main attraction, Elephant Festival of Assam is celebrated every year at kaziranga national park. The climate of Kaziranga Park is tropical. Its best visiting season is from mid-November to early April months. The best way to enjoy wildlife safaris to the Kaziranga National Park is on elephant back or on jeeps. Manas National Park of Assam


Manas National ParkManas National Park is also known as Royal National Park. The Park is situated in Kamrup-Golapara district, on the foothills of the Himalayas and a part of it extends to Bhutan. Manas were declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1966, when most of the Bhutan was under pristine forest cover. It is spread over an area of 391 square kilometers in Assam. The name of the park is derives from the Manas River, which is named after the serpent god Manasa. The Manas River is a major tributary of Brahmaputra River, which passes through the heart of the national park. On 1st October 1928 it was declared a sanctuary and in December 1985 it was designated a World Heritage site. It was declared a national park in 1980. The main sanctuary lies in the Kokrajhar and Barpeta districts of Assam, India and the buffer zone spreads to the reserve forest areas of Kachugaon, North Kamrup and Haltugaon, Assam, India. This wildlife sanctuary is located at a distance of 176 kilometers from Guwahati, the Capital city of Assam, India. Manas known for its Project Tigers, Rhinos & Elephants, and is Assam's one of the two Tiger projects. The sanctuary is home to a great variety of wildlife, including tiger, Golden Langur, Wild Buffalo, Hispid Hare, Pigmy Hog, Capped Langur, Indian one-horned Rhinoceros, Elephant, Gaur, Hog Deer, etc. The Manas Wildlife National Park is home to more than 450 species of birds also. The best time to visit the Manas national park is during the months of November to April.

Orang(Rajiv Gandhi)National Park of Assam


Orang National Park Orange National Park is one of the best National Parks of North East India. The Park is situated in the Darrang and Sonitpur districts of Assam. Orang is 150 kms from Guwahati and 31 kms from Tezpur. Orang National Park is popularly known as 'Mini Kaziranga Park is a small park but it has lots of variety of wildlife. This park is oldest game reserve of the State just on the northern bank of river Brahmaputra with an area of 78.80 sq. kms and an important breeding ground for varieties of Fishes. The Orang National Park in Assam is famous for its natural scenic beauty that captivates the tourists from all over the world. The Park was established as a sanctuary in 1985 and declared a National Park on 13th of April 1999. A 35 year old elephant gave birth to a twin calf at Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, which is rare in the history of Assam forest along with Northeast India. Elephant safari is the best option to explore the Park. In this park sixty percent of the sanctuary is grassland. The animals seen in this sanctuary are the One-horned Rhinoceros, Leopard, Elephant, Sambar, Barking Deer, Tiger, varieties of water birds, Green Pigeon, Florican, Teal , Goose, etc. Various species of birds such as the Pelican, Cormorant, Greylag Goose, Large Whistling Tea Great Adjutant Stork, King Vulture etc. have also found this sanctuary to be their ideal habitat. Its best time to visiting season is November to March.

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park of Assam


Dibru-Saikhowa National ParkDibru-Saikhowa National Park is one of the largest park of Assam, is situated in the south bank of the river Brahmaputra in the extreme east of Assam state in India. It is a National Park as well as a Biosphere Reserve having an area of 340 sq. kms in Tinsukia district. Tinsukia is the nearest town to Dibru-Saikhowa, which is 500 km away Guwahati. This park was declared a wildlife Sanctuary in 1986 by the government of Assam by uniting two Reserve forests, viz., Dibru and Saikhowa including some other areas. Dibru Saikhowa National Park is one of the 19 (nineteen) biodiversity hotspots in the world. It mainly consists of semi wet evergreen forests, tropical moist deciduous forest, bamboo, cane brakes and grasslands. November to April is the best time for visiting this park. Dibru-Saikhowa houses many rare and endangered species of wild life. The main attractions of Dibru-Saikhowa National Park are its semi-wild horse and White winged Wood- Duck. The bright coloured wild horses which are known as Feral Horses are another species of wild life which makes Dibru Saikhowa very famous. The forest area of the Dibru-Saikhowa national park comprises of deciduous and semi-evergreen forests, swamp forests and patches of wet evergreen forests. The national park consists of a total of 36 species which include Hog Deer, Gangetic Dolphin, Royal Bengal Tiger, Jungle Cat, Asaiatic Water Buffalo, Capped Langur, Small Indian Civet, barking Deer, Slow Loris, Clouded Leopard, Asian Elephant, Chinese Pangolin, Malayan Giant Squirrel, etc.

Nameri National Park of Assam


Nameri National ParkSituated in the District of Sonitpur, the Nameri is the third National Park of Assam. The park is located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. The Nameri National Park covers a huge area of 200 sq. km. and extends up to east and south west bank of the river Bor Dikorai from interstate boundary at Sijussa to the left bank of Jia Bharali River. The park also extends up to the south bank of Balipara Reserve Forest. The park is the second Tiger reserve of Assam and is located about 35-km from the Tezpur town. It was established as a sanctuary on 18th September 1985 and was officially declared as a National Park on 15th November, 1998. It is counted amongst the richest and most threatened reservoirs of plant and animal life in the world. Nameri is a haven for many rare animals. The rich wildlife includes Tiger, Black bear, elephant, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, Indian Bison, Pangolin, Indian wild dog, deer, Civet Cat, Capped Langur, Jackals etc.Various species of birds such as the endangered white winged wood duck, four species of Hornbill, butterflies and reptiles are also found here.The Nameri National Park is also well known as one of the most favorite tourist destinations in north-eastern India. The best time to visit the park is between the months of November to March.
