Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary of Assam
The state of Assam is blessed with great rivers, hills and forests. In these one can find exotic flora and fauna and hence Assam is a delight for the various naturalists. The state boasts of five national parks, seven wildlife sanctuaries and three bird sanctuaries. Some of the endangered animals and birds like the Indian rhinoceros and Golden langur are found in these forests and is a safe haven for these wild beings.
The Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary is spread over the Dhubri and Kokrajhar districts of Assam. It is especially famous for the endangered Golden Langur (or Gee's Golden Langur). The Golden Langur is found only in the hills of Assam and Bhutan. Chakrashila is the second protected habitat for the Goden Langur.
The Chakrashila wildlife sanctuary was initially declared as a reserve forest by the Government of Assam in 1966 and finally on 14th July 1994 it was given the status of a wildlife sanctuary. The sanctuary covers an area of 45.568 km2 (4556.8 hectares) and is located at a distance of 6 km from the Kokrajhar town.
The sanctuary is a located in a scenic forest location surrounded by hills and two lakes (Dheer Beel and Diplai Beel) on either side. The Chakrashila sanctuary is the home for different kinds of animals and birds. One can find snakes, crocodiles, alligators, lizards, turtles, Indian Short-tailed Mole, Indian Flying Fox, Short Nosed Fruit Bat, Indian False Vampire, Indian Pipistrelle, Rhesus Macaque, Chinese Pangolin, Asiatic Jackal, Bengal Fox, and more than forty species of butterfly in the sanctuary. Hornbills are also sometimes spotted here.
