Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has invited applications from candidates for admission to the Master of Arts(M.A) programme in Development Studies that will be starting in July 2012. There will be a written test through which candidates will be selected for the course. The details are given below.

Categories of students in M.A program of Development Studies at IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati admits students to the M.A programme of Development Studies in the following categories.

  • Regular (Full time)

  • Sponsored (Full time)


In the regular category, students have to work full time for their M.A. degree. But for the sponsored category, a candidate must be sponsored by a recognized R & D organization, governmental organization, NGO, academic institution, development agency or industry for doing MA in IIT Guwahati on a full time basis. Another important fact is that the applicant will not receive any financial support from this institute. In addition the candidate must be a regular employee of his/her organization and must have at least 2 years of experience. Remember that those who seek admission in the sponsorship category must submit the sponsorship form along with the application form.

Eligibility criteria for M.A program of Development Studies at IIT Guwahati

I have already mentioned that there are different categories for this M.A program in IIT Guwahati. So the eligibility criteria will differ for each category. Candidates should check well the category through which they are applying for this M.A programme.

  • For regular category:
    Candidates having a bachelor's(10+2+3) degree(major/honours) or equivalent from any recognized universities with any discipline having a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale(but in the case of SC/ST/PD candidates only 45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale is required) in major/honours only OR For a candidate not having major/honours courses, they must have the concerned degree with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for OBC/general category candidates but for SC/ST/PD category candidates, a minimum of 455 aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-popint scale is required


  • For sponsored category:
    In the case of sponsored category candidates, eligibility is the same as regular category students. In addition they have to fulfill some conditions specified for sponsored candidates indicated under categories for students of M.A programme


  • For candidates still to appear in the qualifying examination:
    Candidates who are still to appear for their qualifying degree examination are also eligible to apply for this M.A degree programme in IIT Guwahati. But they must appear for all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all the requirements before 17 July 2012. If selected, they must be admitted provisionally but they have to furnish their results latest by 31 August 2012. Also they have to fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI etc
