The name Nandi Hills leads many stories about the origination of its name, according to historians this beautiful natural hills called as Ananda Giri hills literally means the hill of happiness, according to another story a penance was performed by Yoga Nandeeshwara, hence the Nandi Hills was derived as Yoga Nandeeswara is situated on the top of the hill, in other words it is also called as Nandidurga which means a fort, which is said to be built by Tippu Sultan, but the name Nandi Hills could have been derived as from a certain distance this hill resembles the structure of a sleeping bull.

At the weekends one can see a lot of young enthusiasts, as this is the most favourite place for young genre, which is also a most enchanting place for lovers as the place is very quite looks very beautiful with natural sceneries, for family people this is the most ideal place to spend together as the cost incurs is very economical, and also this is ideal place for spiritual minded people where they get peace and tranquility.

The Nandi Hills is around 60 km away from the capital city Bangalore, which pushes its visitors with breathtaking natural and scenic beauty, very good climatic condition, the Nandi Hills is situated in the Chikkaballapur, which is 4,851 feet above sea level, ultimately this is ideal picnic spot.

Nandi Hills – Accommodation

Here if one needs to stay, the administration has provided a very well furnished accommodation for visitors and tourists like Nehru House which was earlier called as Cubbon House, which was built by Lord Cubbon with well furnished 18 rooms another one is Gandhi House where Mahathma Gandhi was stayed here for a while, but this accommodation is under the control of DPAR a State Government Department, as this place is reserved for some important dignitaries.

A vegetarian restaurant is available here which is managed by State Horticultural Department and another one vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurant which is managed by Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation which is called as Mayura.

One can reach Nandi Hills easily as the condition of road is very good which is around 8 km from foot of the hill to reach top, in addition medical, postal, telegraph and telephone facilities are available on the way to reach top of the hill.

Nandi Hills- Route

Once you reach Bellary road via Sankey road, reach Devanahalli corss, which is available at the 36th milestone, take left deviation and further travel around 11 km then you will reach Nandi cross. It is around 3 km from here to reach the foot of the hill. If you travel from Doddaballapur, take right reach the destination road which leads to the top of the hill, from here it will be around 8 km.

Nandi Hills – Other places to visit

Amruth Sarovar, this a beautiful natural water lake which brims with lucid water through the year.

Tippus Summer Palace and Fort, this fort was built by the chieftains of Chikkaballapur during the Ganga period, this fort was used by Tippu Sultan in summer seasons, which was called as Summer Bungalow.

Gavi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple, this is one can see enroute to Sultanpet from Tippu's palace, this temple is consists of huge boulders which was transformed as a temple.

Fort, this fort is covered with an area of 90 acres and it is situated 4,851 feet above the sea level, this fort was constructed in a way that a soldier can hide within this well constructed fort and used to shoot in all four directions.

Horse Way, this is a stone doorway available in the fort on its North-eastern side, as this was built to make a horse way to help soldiers who can climb the wall on horse back.

Palar River Origin, this takes its birth like a small sprint on the eastern towards the hill.

Brahmashrama, is a serene place for the people with spiritual minded and with the help of huge boulders this was built.

Yoga Nandeeshwara Temple, this is an exquisite temple with an intricate carvings and also can be used as Kalyana Mantap.

Tippu Drop, this is the place the criminals were pushed to death from this point as an punishment, this was the practice in Tippu Sultan's regime.

Arkavathi River Origin, is the birth place of the river Arkavathy on south west side of the hill.

Secret Passage, one can see this passage on the western side of the hill, this passage is made to help the kings to escape when some unforeseen attacks took place.

Childrens Playground is constructed by state owned horticulture department for children to spend their own time several small amusements like slides, merry-go-round, swings are available.

Muddena Halli, is the place where the world known architect Sir.M.Visweswaraiah was born, this place is 21 km away from Nandi Hills, the ancestral home Sir.M.Visweswaraiah was preserved for public viewing.

Muddena Halli, situated 21 kilometers from Nandi Hills, is the birthplace of Sir. M. Vishveswarayya. His ancestral home, where he was born, has been preserved for public viewing.

Anjaneya Temple, Nellikayi Basavanna, Antaragange, Baananthi Bande, Bhoga Nandeeswara Temple are other places one needs to visit.

The Nandi Hills is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Nandi Hills - How to reach through bus

Several state owned and private buses will ply to this place one can catch the bus from Chikkaballapur, Bangalore and Nandigrama, it is around 2 hours transit time from Bangalore and one hour from Chikkaballapur.
