Chandrasekhara Kambara's early Life

Kambara was born Ghodageri village in the Belagavi district into a Vishwakarma family in 1937. In his school days Chandrasekhar Kambara was lucky to get the guidance e and suggestions from the novelist Krishnamurthy Puranik and Prof S S Bhusnoormath. This was a boon in shaping up his life. Kambara on his part did not spare any effort to achieve his goals in the life. His mother had influenced his life in his childhood nurtured his desire and talent in poetry by reciting folk songs and he had a good influence by this towards folk art and life. He has two elder brothers Parasappa and Yallappa, who are still staying in the small ancestral house of theirs in the native village. Kambara had his school studies in Gokak. During the schooling period his fees and expenses of school were paid by the Swamiji of Savalagi Math. He joined the Lingaraj College at Belgaum. He did his post graduation and Ph D at Dharwad from Karnataka University. In gratitude of the help of the Swamiji, his works will have some reference or other about the Swamiji.


Occupation of Chandrasekhara Kambara

He had worked in various capacities at various places. He started his work in Chicago University, USA. Thereafter he came to Bangalore and taught in Bangalore University. After that he founded the Kannada University at Hampi and was the founder and Vice Chancellor during the period of 1991 to 1998. He was the Chairman of the National School of Dram Society based at New Delhi. This was during the period from 1996 to 2000.


Awards Received by Chandrasekhara Kambara

Kambara

Kambara won the Kamaaladevi chattopadyaya award by Karnataka Sahithya Academy for his book, a well known play with the name "Jokumaraswamy" in 1975. Again in the same year his play 'Natya Sangh' was selected as the 'best play' of the year. Another play "Jaisidanayaka" was selected and won the best play of the year award of 'Vardhamaana Prasasti'.


In 1982 his book "Saavirada Neralu" won the Ahan (a great poet of Malayalam) Award from Kerala as the best collection of poems.
In 1990 he won the K V Shankare Gowada Award for theatre.
In 1983 he received the Sangeet Natak Academy Award, New Delhi for his playwright. In 1991 his play 'Siri Sampige' won the Sahithya Academy Award, New Delhi. This work has been translated into the English Language.
This year, on 19th September, 2011 he got the Country's highest award in literary field the 'Jnanapeeth Award' in recognition for his contribution to the literary field. For the Kannada Language this is the 8th Jnanapeeth Award and he is the 8th recipient.
