Introduction to Mysore city:

Karanji Lake, Mysore :


Karanji in kannada means fountain hence it can be called as a fountain lake. This lake is located just 3 kms close to the city limits just behind Mysore zoo, at the bottom of the chamundi hills which will give you a feeling that you are getting the blessing of Goddesses Chamundeshwari and also the hill view in the evening. Mysore City Buses ply regularly through Karanji Lake.

This lake is a home for more than 70-90 types of species and many migrating birds which come in specific seasons. The lake covers more than 90 acres of space including boating space connecting to a museum within its boundaries. The students interested about birds can collect more information at the regional museum to increase your knowledge and get to know that varied variety of species.

This lake has been recently re-development by the authorities including a children's corner and a water tower. You can take photographs of the birds after paying a nominal fee of Rs.20/- or slightly higher to enjoy and keep memories of this beautiful picnic spot amidst nature which will remain for ever and ever after many many years ahead. You can capture the beautiful fishes and the flying birds while boating in the lake.

1. Mysore Zoo is open on all days except on tuesdays between 8.30am to 5.30pm. The entry charges for adults is Rs. 12/- and Rs. 10/- for children between (5-12yrs). You can take photographs of the animals by paying some nominal fee for the camera at the entrance.

2. Race Course: The greenery beautifully maintained on the track is about 2000metres covering more than 150 betting terminals for the season. The entry fee is Rs. 10/- per head. Contact number for the dates of the races: 0821-2521675

Kukkarahalli Lake:


This lake was created in 1864 under the leadership of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1794–1868) of the Mysore Dynasty. This lake is located adjoining to manasagangotri of the Mysore university and Kalamandira (rangayana) which is just 3 kms from the main city of Mysore. The lake covers more than 4.5 kms in area serving as a walking place amidst nature's beauty. This lake is a home for more than 180 species of birds. A few varieties of endangered species which visit kukkarahalli lake attract the bird watchers during winter season. The boating facility is also available at this lake. Kukkarahalli lake has taken the 38th place in the list of important bird areas (IBAs) in Karnataka listed by "Bird Life International, United Kingdom".

Kukkarahalli lake has inspired many poets and writers, most well-known poet amongst them was Kupalli Venkatappa Puttappa (Kuvempu) and created Ramayana Darshanam which is a part of his warmly appreciated works. Related to writers, R.K.Naryana who usually took his evening stroll and wrote stories of Malgudi which is well known work by every Indian.

2. Rail museum is close by to kukkarahalli lake. This place will be most enjoyed by all ages of people especially by children. Rail museum is open on all days except Monday between 10 am to 1pm and 3 pm to 5 pm. There is no entry charge to visit this museum.

3. Royal Metropole and Hotel Regaalis are the two well-known hotels close by where you can accommodate with reasonable tariff rates and enjoy the hospitality with health club, indoor games and swimming pool.

4. Scouts and Guide grounds provides its best consumer fair or other exhibitions all through the year.

Lingambudi Lake,Mysore:


This lake is one of the oldest lake and it is a home for more than 250 species of birds during the season. This lake is located in Sriramapura which is about 8 kms away from the main city of Mysore. The lush green pedestrian path not only attracts visitors but also motivates research students for study of birds. This lake is well connected with the city buses. Spot-billed pelican, Indian darter, Pin-tailed duck, painted stork are a few species which visit in season at lingambudi lake.
