Madikeri-The scotland of India :



Madikeri, called as the Scotland of India belongs to the district headquarters of Coorg district in Karnataka,India. Madikeri is also called as Mercara which is also very well known as The Scotland of India.Kodagu Nayakas were the rulers for the first time, and they were overthrown and eliminated by the succeeding Haleri rulers. Sometime before the Kodagu Nayakas came to power the mighty Vijayanagar kingdom also had its share of dominance over Kodagu. Madikeri town was founded in the year 1681 by Muddu Raja, the king who belonged to the dynasty named as Haleri!. After him it was hence named as Muddurajakeri, which later became popular as Madikeri!The people who leave here are Coorgis. Their traditional attire varies from the normal Hindu attire in Karnataka. Their occupation includes agriculture where they grow oranges,pepper,coffee,tea and other spices! Coorgis are also famous for their huge body built. Therefore usually they are seen entering the Indian Army.

Places to visit in Madikeri :



Abbey falls :



Abbeey Falls are one of the beautiful falls of Karnataka. The water falls are just visual treat to your eyes.The falls appear suddenly, where the water just falls over the huge rocks into just small pools of river Kaveri. The water falling from the rocks can be easily heard at a very far distance from the road. The water flow is very high during the monsoon season and during the dry seasons the flow is considerably less. A hanging bridge has now been built across the gorge here offering a good view of the falls.The best time to visit is early winter or in the monsoon season. The thing is that you must be very careful in monsoon time since the water flow velocity will be high!The falls can be reached by a narrow road from Madikeri. Cars and taxis can reach the entrance of these falls from where a downhill walk of 500 meters on slightly paved steps takes one to the waterfalls. While walking,the path is little slippery so be careful! Also the path is highly moist so you can see that many leeches attack so better be careful! Outside the Abbeey falls near the road, you can see orange vendors where you can buy cheap oranges. You can enjoy yummy sour oranges in the cool weather! It is located just at a distance of 8 Km from the madikeri city!

Raja Seat :

Raja Seat is of the most beautiful park in Madikeri. The site of the park is very good. Couples enjoy more in this place. It is a must visit for all nature lovers. The park has many plants and trees. It is built on a high level ground with a marvellous view of the cliffs and valleys to the west.A perfect nature site. Toy trains are there inside the Raja seat. You can have a ride in that train too! This was built by the Madikeri kings to spend their leisure time in the evening. It is located just at a distance of 2 Km from the Madikeri city.

Madikeri Fort :



Madikeri fort is one of the chief tourist attraction of Madikeri. that was first built by the grat king madikeri called as the Mudduraaja in the 17th century. Later the Madikeri fort was remoulded in a different way by then great king of Mysore Tipu Sultan by using granite stone which was later named as Jaffarabaad by Tipu sultan himself. In the year 1790, King Dodaveera Raajendra took the authority of looking after the fort.Since this place contains the historical importance, even this place has lot of tourist attractions.The palace is built in European style of architecture with secret underground routes. Presently a big stone sculpture of tortoise stands as a witness to it. There are initials of King Veera Raajendra marked 'V' symbol here and there. As a mark of regret for the brutal killing of the royal live elephant by King Veera Raaja stone replicas of two mighty elephants stand nearby. There is also a unique museum with memorable of ancient antiques like weapons, idols, canon etc. adds more attraction to this place. There is a famous Lord Ganapati temple called as "Kote ganapati" near the main or the head entrance of the fort.

Omkareshwara Temple :



Located at the heart of the Madikeri town,Omkareshwara temple was built by the king Lingaraajendra -II in the year 1820. The Omkareshwara temple in Madikeri has beautiful forms of architecture. The two beautiful types of architecture include the Islamic form and Gothic form of architecture.The other forms of architecture include Catholic and Keralite forms. It is located at a distance of 1 Km from the city that is very near. Even this place has lot of historical importance. The Shivalinga was brought from Kashi by the King Lingarajendra to get rid of the sin. The sin was the King Linga raajendra killed a very pious and honest Brahmin man who later troubled him as a demon. To avoid his troublings, King Lingaraajendra-2 built this huge Omarakeshwara temple is the history behind the Omkareshwara temple in Madikeri.

Nisargadhama:



Nisargadhama is a beautiful,huge ecological park, where River Kaverisplits forming a beautiful island and a thick bamboo forest. Nisarga Dhama park in Madikeri, the main attractioninclude the hanging bridge, boating rides, elephant rides, tree top shelter, deer park,zoo visits,biodiversity etc. The place huge attraction of tourists from all parts of country. Even foreigners come here. Also some botany and zoology subject research people come here to study the biodiversity present here. People are seen playing in river water also. But please be careful during summer season!Especially with children.Nisargadhama is located at a distance of 30 Km from the main Madikeri city.

Tibetan monastery and Golden temple of lord Buddha :



Lot of Tibetan refugees live in this place.This Tibetan settlement at Bailkoppa or Baylkuppe is the the second largest Tibetan settlement outside Tibet. These people basically worship lord buddha. A huge golden temple for Lord buddha is built which is major tourist attraction of Madikeri .It is located at a distance of 30 Km from the main Madikeri city. It is located near a place called Kushalnagara approximately located at a distance of 6 Km.The statues of Buddha, Padmasambhava, and Amitayus are the noticeable ones. The walls of the temples and the institutions are decorated with colorful paintings showing the famous gods and demons from Tibetan and Buddhist mythology.
