Brief history of Royal Challengers Bangalore


This article is to give details of the brief details of the Royal Challengers Bangalore performances of the Indian Premier League earlier seasons, season one to season 4. Royal Challengers Bangalore is a Bangalore based team under flag ship company UB group Vijay Mallya.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)

Royal Challengers is a Bangalore based cricket players team in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The RCB team is owned by industrialist Vijay Mallya through his flagship company UB Group. The team for the current season – 2012 is captained by Daniel Vettori of New Zealand who is an all rounder in cricket games. The coach of the team is Ray Jennings. Mr Jennings is a South African Cricket player. The Royal Challengers Bangalore team is one of the first 8 teams when the IPL concept came into being during the year 2008. The teams which take part in IPL games are bought by auction system. Each team will be auctioned and the person who pays the highest in the bid owns the team. The Royal Challengers Bangalore was the 2nd highest bid team. The highest paid team is Mumbai Indians owned by Mukesh Ambani group. For RCB the UB group had to pay 111.6 million US Dollar in 2008. The ownership is for 10 years.
History of performances of RCB

The team was formed in 2008. In the 2008 matches Royal Challengers Bangalore won 4 matches and lost 10. This team was 2nd last in the first season IPL 1. Mr Mallya was very much upset with the poor show and publicly criticized him team members Rahul Dravid and Charu Sharma. He rued that he should have involved in the selection of the team members.

In the 2009 season (IPL 2) the team captain was Kevin Pietersen and the team lost few games. Just at that time the captain was called by his country for duty there and had to leave India. In his place Anil Kumble was brought in and the luck of the team changed. The team came to the 2nd position in the game. Another plus point for RCB in IPL 2 is that the team member Manish Pandey was the first Indian to score century by making 114 runs against the Deccan Chargers team.

In the 3rd edition of IPL in 2010 the team had a mixed fortune. The team came to 3rd position but was the team with highest successful run chase in this edition and the 2nd highest run chase in IPL history till now.
In the 4th edition (IPL – 4) it defeated the Mumbai Indians to come to the finals but lost to Chennai Super King and came to 2nd position. In this season – the IPL 4 the captain of the team was Daniel Vettori who is leading the team the current edition of IPL 5 also. For this season of IPL 4 the team included Chris Gayle who was to a great extent justified his inclusion by becoming instrumental in many wins of the team in IPL 4.
