Prithviraj Chavan Profile Early Life and Political Career

A native of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Prithviraj Chavan's permanent residence is at Satara, Maharashtra. Prithviraj's parents, Shri D.R.Chavan and Shrimati Premlabai Chavan, were both MPs from Karad, Maharashtra and his father, Shri D. R. Chavan, was a Cabinet Minister in Jawaharlal Nehru's Govt.

Prithviraj Chavan is highly educated, having graduated with a degree in B.E.(Hons) and later pursuing M.S. from the prestigious B.I.T.S., Pilani, Rajasthan as well as from the University of California, Berkeley, U.S.A. Prior to studying at Berkeley, Prithiviraj Chavan had earned a UNESCO fellowship to study in Germany.

Post graduation, Prithviraj Chavan took up a job for 3 years at Aerospace Industries and studied aircraft instrumentation as well as audio recorders designing for anti-submarine warfare. His fascination for all things electronic led to an establishment of an R&D and design lab for information technology on his return to India in 1974.

About a decade later, Prithiviraj Chavan was working on a unique program which would result in the computerisation of various Indian languages. It was at this time that destiny took a turn for the technologist. At around that time, Rajiv Gandhi had entered the political fray and was keen to get all land revenue records computerized. It was thus that Chavan crossed paths with Gandhi. Their initial meetings developed into strong bonds and they got along extremely well, so much so that Chavan was granted a ticket to contest the 1984 Elections from Karad. He won that election, thereby cementing his place on the political front.

Despite his reluctance, Chavan was persuaded by Rajiv Gandhi to continue to contest subsequent elections. He won practically all, except for the one held in 1999. It was in that year that the Congress Pary split up and Sharad Pawar set up his own independent party. Although Prithiviraj Chavan was not to become a minister in Narasimha Rao's government, he continued to learn the ropes. Farsighted that he was, Chavan was one of the few who understood Manmohan Singh's visions for reforms in the country. It was in April 2002 that Prithiviraj Chavan was elected to the Rajya Sabha. He had come a long way from being a member of the Indian National Congress way back in 1973!

As the main man in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) of the Manmohan Singh Government, Prithivriaj Chavan has got the tag of "trouble-shooter" for his quiet but very efficient ways of dealing with problems and supporting the PM to the hilt.

In addition, he is a member of the India International Centre and the India Habitat Centre, both in New Delhi.
