The Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi A Founder of Modern India

1.

Indira Gandhi, the third Prime Minister of our country had the two sons. The first was Rajiv Gandhi and he second Sanjay Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi was educated in England and married a Italian lady, named Sonia Gandhi. At first, he did not show any interest in politics, although his mother was Prime Minister. Rajiv Gandhi preferred to be a commercial pilot. His brother's death in a plane accident changed his life. His mother who was then Prime Minister wanted Rajiv to aid her in her activities of the Congress Party. So, he bade goodbye to his profession and joined his mother in politics.
His mother's death, which was sudden and unexpected forced on him the dual responsibility of working as Prime Minister for the nation and also as a President of the Indian National Congress. He was a young man of 40 years, when he was asked to shoulder these great responsibilities. He rose to the occasion and proved to be as an able Prime Minister. He won the love and loyalty from his people at his country and also respect from leaders of other countries in the world.

When he became the Prime Minister, he was the youngest in his cabinet and so it required a lot of understanding and lot of tact to adjust with the experienced elders. Being a new individual in politics, understanding international relations were a big problem, but he over came all these responsibilities very easily.
2.
As a young man, Rajiv Gandhi had a scientific bend of mind. He was away from superstitions and believed in industrialization based on science and technology. He carried the slogan of his mother "Garibi Hatao" to its logical end. His Rozgar Yojan Scheme is a testimony to this.

His trips abroad won many friends for India. His visit to china in particular, rebuilt the broken ties of friendship on the basis of Panchsheel. His participation at SAARC meeting enhanced India's prestige. Rajiv Gandhi believed in peaceful methods to solve problems. He did not tolerate terrorism in any shape anywhere. So he went to rescue of the Government of Sri Lanka by sending Indian troops to put down the L.T.T.E terrorism. But that enraged the L.T.T.E cadre and Rajiv Gandhi was put on the hit list.

An attempt was made on him when he paid an official visit to Sri Lanka he escaped the attempt. But when Rajiv Gandhi was on his election in Tamil Nadu, when L.T.T.E suicide squad women detonated a bomb killing Rajiv Gandhi on the spot at Sri Perambadur on the 21st of May, 1991. The nation mourned his loss for days. He came like a star on the horizon and vanished as quickly as he appeared.
