Introduction of Patteeswarar Temple


Patteeswarar Temple is the famous pilgrim centre in Coimbatore District. The temple is situated at Perur, 7kms from Coimbatore west near River Noyyal on the Siruvani Main road. Lord Shiva is worshipped as "Patteeswarar" and Lord Parvathi as "Pachainaayagi" or "Maragathaambal". The temple is one of the best "Shivasthalam" in Kongu region. This temple is well known for its archaeological brilliance.

Why the temple called as Patteeswarar Temple?


The history of the temple back to 1500 A.D. The temple was built by Karigala Cholan. He is the famous king in Chola Empire in Southern part of India. "Patti" was the daughter of divine cow "Kamadhenu". One day the calf of Kamadhenu was played in the forest. At time suddenly the calf legs hits on the hard object. Blood secreted more for calf. People dig the ground and found the "Siva Lingam". The blood of calf secreted on the head of Lingam. So Siva Lingam stayed there and Temple was built by the King. Then the Lord Shiva called as "Patteeswarar" and this temple became an important Sthalam. Appar and Sundarar sung the song in Devaram for Lord Pateeswarar in this sthalam.

Background of Patteeswarar temple


In temple, there was a famous mandapam names "Kanaga Sabhai" was built in 17th century by Alagadri Nayak of Madurai. 63 Saints were built this mandapam in the temple. Recently the mandapam wer built again and repaired.

Lord Nataraja giving blessings in Kanaga Sabhai hall. In temple,there was a tank steps with 16 angles. The temple are very ancient inscriptions of good value. The temple is capable of spiritual freedom to devotees by bestowimg "Moksha".

Lord Ganapathi, Dandaayuthapaani, Bhairava, Dakshinamurthy, Surya, Chandra and Navagrahas etc were separately blessings in temple. The surroundings of this temple was very different and with good arts. The roof of this temple has many stone chains showing different characters. The temple is big one and have five big Gopurams. In north there was a mandapams for 63 Nayanmars. There was 10 pillars carvings for Lord Patteeswarar.

There are 5 holy tanks in temple. Jnana, Vapi, Kodi Theertham in first prakaram, Tapa keni is opposite of Devi penance, Teppakulam in east front of Gopuram. Lord Vishnu Durga with eight armed hands attracts a large number of devotees.

Festivals in Patteeswarar Temple


Every year the temple celebrated Pangunu Uthiram festival in March month very grandly. Many devotees also conducted this temple in every important festivals to receive Lord blessings. Arudhra dharisanam is the famous festival during margali month. The most important festival here is Muthu Pandal Vizha in month of Aani.
