Introduction of Suriyanar Koil Temple in Thanjavur District
Suriyanar Temple is one of the most holy place in tamilnadu. The temple is located at Suriyanar Koil and 15 km away from Kumbakonam in Thanjavur District. The temple is dedicated to Lord Surya (Sun).Lord Surya is the father of all the planets. The temple was built by Chola King Kulothunga – I in the year 110 A.D. The Raja Gopuram of this temple is about 15.5m high and has 3 stages with 5 kalasams on top of Gopuram. The holy tank of this temple called "Surya Puskarani" . This temple is the first of all the Navagraha temple to visit in Tamilnadu. This is the famous pilgrimage temple in Thanjavur.
Devotees can visit Thiru Mangalakudi Temple before visiting Suriyanar temple. This temple is 1 km away from Suriyanar Koil. The Idol of this temple are Lord Shiva as "Prananatheswarar" and Lord Parvathi as "Mangalambigai". In this temple the holy water is Mangala Theertham and Vimana is Mangala Vimanam. Lord Surya called as "Siva Suriya Peruman" in Suriyanar Temple. The temple is situated on holy river of Cauvery. Once, Muni Kalava was suffered a lot from Skin Disease (Leprosy). So He prayed to 9 Navagrahas to cure his disease. But he didn't cure from disease. By seeing this, Lord Brahma got anger on Navagrahas because they didn't cure Muni Kalava, whom prayed lot 9 planets. Brahma said the 9 planets about their duty. The Navagrahas work is the suffer or enjoy life based on the persons either bad or good in act and also rule the favour on their appointment. So Brahma cursed all the 9 planets and they also suffered from Leprosy.
All the 9 Navagrahas were sincerely performed pooja for Lord Shiva in Velleruku forest to cure from disease. Lord Shiva appeared for them and requested 9 planets to do everything good to devotees, whom praying 9 planets. Lord Surya (Sun) is the first of all the planets. Lord Surya was the son of Sage Kashyap. He married the daughters of Viswakarma. He have 3 childrens were Sannesswaran, Yaman and Yamuna. Surya blessed the devotees with his two partners Usha Devi and Chaya Devi in standing position of this temple. Sun hold two lotus in his hands. The temple is designed a chariot (Vimana) and ride 7 horses chariot. Lord Sun is famous for Intelligence, strength, character of people, knowledge, confidence, courage, positive think, straight –forwardness, behavior, good eyesight, relief from skin disease.

Devotees fulfill their prayers and offered Wheat, Sakarai Pongal, Rava, Archanai with red lotus, red clothes to Surya. Surya is the lord of Leo (Simmam). The gem stone for Surya is Ruby. Sunday is his favourite day.
Lord Shiva, Nandhi, Kasi Visvanathan, Visa Lakshmi, Kolvinai theertha Vinayagar, Nataraja, Guru, Sani, Budhan, Angarakan, Chandran, Rahu, Ketu, Chandikeswarar were worshipped in this temple. Surya make the good eyesight, if he produce over heat people cannot live in this world and became lazier. The holy tree of this temple was Velleruku tree (Madar tree). There are artha mandapam, guru mandapam and saba nayakar mandapam is situated in front of this temple. There are only 2 temples for Lord Surya were in Suriyanar Koil and Konark in North side.
"Ratha sapthami" one of the famous festivals of Tamilnadu is celebrated in this temple on the tamil month Thai (January- February), vijaya dasami, first Sundays in month of Aavani and Krithigai. Every Sundays there is special pooja celebrated in temple. Sani and Guru peyarchi pooja are well performed.Temple Timings
