Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park Coimbatore District Tamil Nadu


Indira Gandhi National Park formerly known as Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu. It is situated at a distance of 35 kilometers from Pollachi town in Coimbatore District of Tamilnadu. The total area covered by this wildlife sanctuary is 958 square kilometers. The Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1976 and this sanctuary encompasses a National Park which has been renamed as Indira Gandhi National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in 1987. The location of Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is very good and is tucked in between Tamilnadu and Kerala and is one of the great mountain ranges of the South, having on it the highest elevation south of the Himalayas.

The flora and fauna of Indira Gandhi National Park is very unique and rare varieties which are fast disappearing could also be seen here. Fauna consists of elephants, tiger, leopard, sloth-bear, Porcupine, flying squirrel, Pangolin, Civet Cat and Panther. If you are a bird lover, you can find here a variety of rare species birds which includes Black headed Oriole, Red whiskered bulbul, Rocket-tailed Drongo, Spotted Dove, Tree Pie, Pigeon etc. The amaravathi reservoir in Anamalai has large number of crocodiles. But the major attraction of Anamalai wildlife sanctuary are Nilgiri langur, lion tailed macaque and spectacular birds.

How to reach Indira Gandhi National Park/Anamalai Wildlife Sanctuary



The Anamalai wildlife santuary in Pollachi is located in the coimbatore district of Tamilnadu. The distance of Indira Gandhi national park is situated at a distance of about 90 kilometres from Coimbatore airport. There is also a fleet of buses which operates from Palani and Coimbatore and stop at Pollachi which is about 35km and from there you can board a bus which operates twice daily to the park at 6.00am and 3.00pm. The bus returns to Pollachi at 8.00 am and 6.00pm. Alternatively you can also catch and hire a cabs from Pollachi and Parambikulam. The park is open round the hear but the best season to visit Anamalai wildlife sanctuary is from February to June.
