Traditional Tamilnadu sweet Somaas


Somaas is a traditional sweet famous in TamilNadu. This is a special recipe made on festivals such as deepavali, Krishna jayanti, etc. Somas is displayed in the Seemandam or Valaikappu (done during the 7th or 9th month of pregnancy) function along with other varisais from the mother's house. Ingredients to make Tamilnadu sweet recipe Somas


Preparation of the Base for Somas
Maida- 1 cup
Rava - 1 cup
Salt - a little
Water to knead the flour tigthly.

Preparation of the Filling for somas
Fried Gram(Pottu Kadalai) - 150 gms
Sugar - 200gms
Grated Coconut- 1 cup
Cardamom powder- 1/4 tsp

Method for making Sweet Somas recipe


1 Fry the grated coconut in ghee.

2. Make a coarse powder of fried Gram and Sugar along with the grated coconut and add the cardamom powder and keep it aside.

3 Knead the maida, rava along with the required amount of water and make this to a tight flour.

4. Roll the flour into poori's of desired size.

5 Place about 1tbsp of the powder for filling in the each pooris and fold them. Seal the ends so that it will not open and deep fry the somas in oil.
