History of Cuddalore


The history of Cuddalore is witnessed by the remains of Fort St David, a small fort which was built by a Hindu merchant. This fort was taken in possession by the Marathas when Gingi was captured by Shivaji in the year 1677. Later in 1690 the British purchased the historical fort from the Marathas along with the towns and villages that were near the fort. Thus Cuddalore was taken in possession by the British.
