Onam Gods own country festival


Onam is one of the most important festival that is celebrated by both Kerala and Tamilnadu people.It is a symbol of welcoming the King Mahabali who was the ruler of Kerala before a few decades.This festival is also called as festival of flowers.In this occasion the people used to celebrate it by Atthapoo kolam,new dress,sweets.The ladies used to wear white saree called as Nerial saree which is cream in colour and men used to wear white Dhoti.Onam is a ten day festival.

Onam Festival is one of the most important festivals in Tamilnadu and Kerala. This festival will be celebrated for ten days starting from the star Hastham to star Thiruvonam.

The story behind Onam is on olden days Kerala will be ruled by the king Mahabali Chakaravarthi. During his era the country was happy and prosperous. He is the devotee of lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu tried to check his spirituality,so Lord Vishnu have taken dwarf avathar and asked to the King that he wants 3 square feet land. King Mahabali granted Lord Vishnu's wish and immediately Lord Vishnu changed his avatar into a big person. Then Lord Vishnu tricked the King Mahabali in to the under world called Pathalam. King Mahabali begged Lord Vishnu that Once in a year he can visit his own land and watch his people's wellness. Lord Vishnu granted his wish and praised him.

The people's of the King Mahabali used to welcome him by White washing their home, cleaned atmosphere,Onam Unjal, with Atthapoo kolam (The important thing in Onam festival). The people used to draw kolam by using flowers and each and every day the ring of the kolam will get increased by one. The last day,that is on Thiruonam the Kolam will be completed. On ThiruOnam the people will never sweep their house, if they did so their King will went back. So the people will clean and sweep at night and on Onam they will prepare different Curries with so many payasams. On Onam the ladies will dance together by wearing separate costume called "Narial saree" which is cream in color with golden bordered and men with Doti and White shirt. They used to share their greetings and sing songs and play swing Unjal.
