I would say that one of the artillery in the production of railway coaches in india is the ICF which is situated at Perambur, Chennai. I would say that it is the largest unit of production of Coaches in the whole of Asia and is divided into two divisions namely the Shell division and Furnishing division the details of the factory has been provided in a brief manner in the following paragraphs.
Integral Coach Factory Situated at Perambur, Chennai
Integral coach factory is the factory that is involved in the production of coaches for the whole nation India and it is located at Chennai which makes Tamil Nadu a superior place when it comes to production of railway coaches. The factory was first developed by Lal Bahadur Shastri under the leadership of pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The company usually produces more than 1336 coaches and nearly 6 coaches are produced per day. The Integral Coach factory also employs more than 1500 employees all over Tamil Nadu.
Structure of the organization
The Integral Coach Factory consists of two main parts - shell division and the furnishing division. The shell division manufactures the skeleton of the rail coach, while the furnishing division is concerned with the coach interiors and amenities.Shell Division
The Shell division does the primary functioning of production of coaches. The shell division is the place where the raw materials are purchased from external sources and they are turned into finished products to make the External parts of the Coaches. There are various parts like sidewall main frame, Boogie, Roofs and Head stocks etc., that have to be produced in the factory there are more number of employees involved in this section of the factory. The factory works on the concept of Job shops where there are many shops like shop A, Shop B, up to Shop E and all the production process is divided in these sections. THe shop A, B, C involves the conversion of iron sheets to roof, Sidewalls, Boogie etc., THe D and E shop involves aspect like welding, there is other shops like Transport shop that involves trasport of goods from one section to other section.
All these parts are produced individually and at the end are attached to form an outline of the coaches, and the tyres, Boogie and all the main frames and side frames are attached in this division itself. Once it is completed the machineries are send to the furnishing division of ICF.Furnishing Division
Furnishing division is the division that is developed with the prospect to enhance the look and aesthetics of the coaches. The Furnishing division is the place where the painting is done after doing various things that would make the coach ready for its use. The Furnishing division involves aspects like wiring that connects the bulbs, Fans that are fixed in the coaches, The fans, fixing the Air conditions in case of AC coaches, Fixing the seats of the coaches and at the end painting the coaches which ends the production of coaches. There are other process also involved in this division like finance section and Human Resource section that maintains the perfect record of the the financial position of the company and the job opportunities provided by the company. 1. Today the coach factory produces more than 1600 coaches of more than 170 varieties.
2. Nearly 1336 coaches are manufactured every year, and 6 coaches are manufactured per day.
3. It employs about 13,000 persons.
4. The factory is based on the job shop model of production system.
5. About six coaches are produced in a day.
It should also be noted that India has been the largest producer in this whole Asia and is also a great exporter of coaches to other nations like Sri lanka, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and many more Asian nations.
