The Villupuram District in is one of the vast districts in Tamil Nadu as it is counted as the second largest district. The district lies near to Thiruvannamalai district. History of Villupuram District in Tamil Nadu


The Villupuram District was first called as Villupuram Ramasamy Padayatchiyar district. Later on the name was modified as Villupuram in 1993. Many older Tamil kings have ruled over this place and left their monument for their remembrance. In the olden days Tamil Nadu was mainly ruled by three major dynasties. They are

Gingee Fort in Villupuram


The Gingee Fort in Villupuram is one of the ancient monuments. During the kings rule in India Gingee was considered one of the major city for the kings. Many kings have build their grand palace and lived in this place. Till today the Gingee Fort witnesses the king's rule in the Tamil Nadu region. The grand palaces which were built on the great hills are very stronger even now. The Palace was built by joining three hills. In all the three hills he has built the palace and made a super passing ways to each palace with much safety. The palace is surrounded by a big huge cannel. The olden kings have dug a huge cannel around their palace and filled it with water. They have put enormous number of crocodile in to the cannel through which no one could pass through and enter the Palace. The cannel is visible even today. The cannel is around 30 feet in width…!!!.

The amazing steps to go up to the mountain are well done by the ancient people. The Gingee Fort is believed to have been built before 800 years by the vijaya nagar king. His dynasty had ruled a vast area of land from Nellore to Trichy having Gingee as their capital. After these kings the Fort came in to the hands of many kings.
