Cuddalore district lies in the east part of tamil Nadu. The cuddalore district takes its north border as Pondicherry and west as Villupuram district. As the district situated on the sea shore the east side is covered by the sea. The extent of the district continues upto Chidambaram. History of Cuddalore District


The Cuddalore District took its birth in the present form in 30.9.1993. Previously the district was mingled with some of the neighbouring towns and was ruled by Nawab. The place Cuddalore then was a part of south Arcot. In 1801 the Nawab gave the carnatic region to the English East Indian Company which appointed Captain Graham as in charge over this region. The place went on to many changes before and after freedom and got its present form from 1993.

Pichavaram


Pichavaram is one of the most notable and very scenic places in Cuddalore district. The Pichavaram has very large area for tourists. Pichavaram near Chidambaram includes very nice the backwaters. The Lignite Corporation in naively was laid the foundation by Pandit Nehru on May 1957. The Lignite corporation in naively is now one of the leading energy producer in India. The NLC was the first lignite-fired Thermal Power station in South Asia. This is also the first pit head Thermal Power station in India.

Silver Beech, Cuddalore


The silver beech is located in Cuddalore. The Silver beech is around three kilometres away from the Cuddalore bus stand. The beech is very beauty. Pilgrimages in Cuddalore District


The Cuddalore district consists of many sacred places. The one among is the Lord Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram which is the very oldest temple in Tamil Nadu. There are also many other temples in Cuddalore district. They are explained below.

Chidambaram Lord Nataraja Temple


The Lord Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram is one of the oldest temples in Tamil Nadu. The temple is belonging to long past that many kings have lived and worshipped in this temple. Many historical events had taken place at Lord Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram. The art and culture of the olden people is written on the stones of Lord Nataraja Temple.

The Lord Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram is believed to have been built in the eleventh century. Lord Nataraj is the lord in this temple. Lord Nataraj is the family God of Vikrama Chola and his successors. The Chola Kings built a city called Kangai Konda Cholapuram and made that city as the capital of their ruling places. The Hall of Dance is a beautiful part of the temple. The Hall of thousand pillars is also one of the important features of Lord Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram.

Pooja Timings in Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram


The Sri Nata Raja Temple in Chidambaram opened and closed in the morning by 1 pm in the after noon. Once again in the evening starts after 4 pm and continued till night. The pooja timings in this temple are as following:
06.45 am The Padukai of Shiva is taken to the Cit Sabha which is called the awakening ceremony.

08.30 am the fire sacrifice is done as per the rituals of the Vedic rules.
10.00 to 11.00 Between these timings the Abhishekam is done to the Linga.
11.30 to 12.00 Lamb Puja is done.
20.00 to 20.30 Lamb Puja with hymns.
22.00 to 22.30 Lamb Puja with music.

Vishnu Temple in Kattu Mannargudi


The temple in Kattu Mannargudi is dedicated to Lord shiva and Sri Rajagopalaswami. This is one of the oldest temple in Tamil Naud. This temple was built by Chola King Kulottunga in around 1120 AD. This temple covers a large area of 6 acres. Thousands of Vishnu devotees visit this temple in all through the year. The annul festival celebrated in this temple are very famous. The temple in Kattu Mannargudi also has many historical events and many art works.

Thiruvahindrapuram


The Cuddalore district also have another sacred place in its surroundings. That is Thiruvahindrapuram near Cuddalore. The temple is situated in a very calm village. The temple of Lord Devanatha is flanked by the inspiring "Oushadagiri" an herbal drop from the hands of speeding Anjaneya. The holy river Garuda Nadhi is a memorable one for the history. Thousands of devotees visit this temple in all through the year. The Annual festival celebrated in this temple are very famous.

Lord Paataleeswarar Temple, Thirupathiripuliyur


The Lord Paataleeswarar Temple in Thirupathiripuliyur, Cuddalore district is one of the saivite shrines which were visited by Thirunavukarasar and Thirugnana Sambanthar. Lord Paataleeswarar is the main deity of this temple. The Lord Paataleeswarar Temple in Cuddalore was built by the Chola and Pandia dynasty. The successor of the kings also had contributed very much for the safety and growth of the temple. The Temple was repaired and works done in 1917 and in 1973. The Lord Paataleeswarar is visited by thousands of devotees every year during the annual festival of the Temple.

Srimushnam


Srimushnam is another Vaishnava temple in Tamil Nadu. (In total there are 8 Vaishnava shrines). Sri Mushnam is located around 30 kilometres away from Chidambaram. Srimushnam temple is not a real one as it is a self created statue of Swayam Vyakta. It represents Varaha Avator.The temple might have been built between in the 17th century. It is believed the Nayaks have built this temple in the ancient time.
