About Pandit Bhimsen Joshi


Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was the famous and incomparable singer of West Bengal. He spend his life to develop the culture of West Bengal. He born on 4th February in the year 1922 in Gadag, Karnataka of India. The residence place of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is Kalashree, Pune, India. The Father's name of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was Late Gururaj who was a MA passed school teacher but Pandit Bhimsen Joshi lost his mother from his childhood. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi has an attraction towards music from his childhood, So his father Gururaj arranged a music class for Bhimsen. Chanappa Kurtakorti Kirtaniya was his first music teacher whom Guru Dakshina was Rs 5/. After knowing the basic things of Singing Bhimsen joined in the music class of Pandit Shyamacharya Singing Classes. Then he learn the music and singing from Pandit Sawai Gandharb who was a very good singer and the student of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan. Then he got more knowledge about music from Sarodiya Hafeez Ali Khan of Gwalior.

After getting all the knowledge about music and singing he came to Mumbai in the year 1943 when his age was just 19 years of old. In that age he joined the Doordarshan and recorded his first song in the year 1946 when his age was just 22. Then his career kept a top speed. He was the master in Dadra classical Indian songs, Bhajan Sangeet, sad songs, Thumri etc. In the film 'Basantabihar' Bhimsen got his first chance to sing a song 'Ketaki gulab juhi champak' in a film with Manna Dey in the year 1956 which is one of the ever green song and the best song of music lovers.

Achievements of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi


Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was awarded with lots of awards and respects. He was awarded the respectful Padmasree award in the year 1972, Sangeet Natok Academy Award in the year 1975, the respectful award Padmabhushan in the year 1985, National Film award in the year 1985, First Platinum Disc Award in the year 1986, Padmabibhusan Award in the year 1999 and the most prestigious Bharatratna in the year 2008.

But on 24th January 2011 Pandit Bhimsen Joshi give away his last breath due to his old age and Kidney failure. But he has woken the young hearts of the new singers of India because he knew that by developing the music one can easily develop the culture of that State.
