Chinna Ponnu is an Indian Tamil play back singer and a folk singer as well. She has lent voice for many folk songs that play a major role in the sound track of a film and hence forth, it has been usual to have a folk and a melody number in certain movies. Her “Nakku Mukka" song from the movie Kadhalil Vizhundhen proved her to be one of the best playback singers to the Tamil film industry and also she gave various other beautiful songs in the Tamil play back singing. Early Life and Back Ground of Folk singer Chinna Ponnu


Chinna Ponnu was born in the state of Tamil Nadu in a small village which is called Suranam and located at the Sivaganga district. Her parents were Mr Arul and Mrs Paramayi; who also belonged to the same village and spent their life there. Since her childhood days, Chinna Ponnu was interested in singing folk songs at a very age too she showed symptoms if being a great singer. At the age of 13, Chinna Ponnu started her career as a singer by singing songs in temples that initially depicted her interest towards songs and music. It was during the festival tome, Chinna Ponnu made her voice popular in the locality she resided by singing songs in many temples and churches by that time. So stage fear was not a mere cause for Chinna Ponnu to lag behind the others, for she always had confidence on stage and would completely be on hype while singing songs.

In the year 1990, Chinna Ponnu got herself married to Mr Selva Kumar at the Thanjavur Mariamman Temple which is one of the most powerful temples in Thanjavur district. Since marriage Chinna Ponnu was able to continue her career in singing without a break. And they continued to sing and compose music in different stages all over Tamil Nadu.

Chinna Ponnu had her inception in career when she was first introduced o Mr Kottaisamy. This introduction was given over by Mr Alagarsamy who was a dedicated folk artist in the priod. Mr Kottaisamy made Chinna Ponnu develop her skills in singing and made her sing many songs which was quite familiarized among the public for all her songs that she sang contained the necessary folk and beats that made people tap their foot according to the rhythm. Kottaisamy introduced ger to Mr K A Gunasekaran who is a researcher in folk songs in Tamil Nadu and portrays his deep interest over music and made folk songs popularize among the western beats.

Mr K A Gunasekaran was highly attracted with the voice of Chinna ponnu and this is the reason why her fame was raised to a great extent. Gunasekaran made her sing in various stages in Tamilnadu and made her voice even more popular among the people of tamilnadu and raised her fame all over tamilnadu. Her performances in various stages were made popular and with that fame she was recognized as one of the most notable playback singer in Tamilnadu.

Suriya Thoranam was her first debut in an audio composition released by Ftaher. Bakianathan. At the age of 15, her first audio cassette that mainly emphasized on folk songs had songs namely “Illaignar Perumanram's Thannae" by CPI which was written and composed by Mr K A Kunasekaran was released.

The period between the years 2004 – 2005 was a turning point in her life, when she got a chance to sing in films, for which the golden opportunity was granted over by poet Arivumathi. She sang many songs for which the music was composed by the music director Mr Selva Kumar. The first debut for Chinna Ponnu in the Tamil film industry was when she sang for the star – studded movie – Chandramukhi directed by P.Vasu. The song for which she lent her voice was “Vazhturen Vazhturen" starring Rajini Kanth, Prabhu, Vineeth, Nayanthara, Jyotika and Malavika in the lead roles.

Symphony audio released her first album called as “Marikolundu" which was again a super duper hit for the folk lovers. Later, she sang many songs for the Tamil cine Industry. She was completely recognized by the song “Nakka Mukka" which she sang for the movie Khadalil Vizhunden. This folk song roused around the dance numbers for the entire cultural event that happened in and around the state for the song became that popular and a tremendous hit among youngsters and kids.

Some of her notable songs in the Tamil film industry are “Athi Sivanae" for the movie Thagapansamy set to the tunes of Sri Kanth Deva, “Mannarkudi Kalakalakka Madura Jilla" for Sivapathikaram starring Vishal and Mamta in the lead role, “Nalu Gopura" for Karuppu sami Kuttagaikarrar composed by Dheena, and “Nakka Mukka" for Khadalil Vizhunden set to the musical tunes of Vijay Anthony.

Chinna Ponnu has sung many songs and was honored with the “Kannadasan award" for her contribution as a best folk singer in the Tamil film industry. In the year 2010, Chinna Ponnu was awarded with the Edition award for singing the song “Nakka Mukka" which always proved to be an all time dance numbers among youngsters.
