She gained fame over her master piece song, “Chandralekha" for the movie, Thiruda Thiruda with the music composed to the tunes of A.R.Rahman. Anupama was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India on the 2nd of September in the year 1968. Anupama received carnatic music training since when she was at the age 4. She began her childhood career where she was a part of all singing competitions that were held in school at age 8. She had her school education at New Delhi from a school called St.Anthony's Senior Secondary school. She got herself graduated with BA degree in English from Kamala Nehru College, New Delhi. Anupama finished her collegiate studies in the year 1989. She dropped out of the Mass Communication Course from the prestigious Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi following her passion to become a singer. Anupama is married to J.Murli Krishnaswami, Creative Director of R.K.Swamy BBDO and they live their life in the Mumbai Metropolitan.

Career and Earning of Playback Singer Anupama


Anupama took part in many competitions since her school and this followed even when she was in her graduation stage. As a part of her study in Mass Communication, she was a trainee in a successful ad agency. This made her participate in an Ad Utsav. Ultimately, Annupama turned out to be a lucrative ad jingles composer and a singer even in the early nineties. The music maestro, A.R.Rahman gave her many chances for anupama in various ad jingles that she was working with. During this period, Rahman was supposed to be known as Dhilip Kumar, where he was not known even to the film industry. Most of her notable ad jingles were: Ponds Dream flower talc and soap, Tatia Resorts, Diplomat Whisky, AVT, Deepika Coconut oil, Trupti range of range of products and Aavin Goodness ice cream.

Anupama's first break in the Tamil film industry was when she sang for Rahman in the movie – Pudhia Mugam and her song in the movie was “July matham vandhaal" in 1993. This song of Anu made her voice break through the industry and the most sought after song for electronic songs. Even though this song was a great hit for her, “Chandralekha" for the movie Thiruda Thiruda made her career all through awesome for once set to the tunes of Rahman.

“Chandralekha" is still known to be ‘The Best' techno – electronic song ever in the industry. Her passion towards songs has made her win accolades that made sky her limit. After her break with Rahman, she worked with leading music directors in the industry and was known as Chandralekha Anupama. Conversely, she remained selective in her songs that she was ought to sign her new ventures with the upcoming films. Her choosy songs turned out to be extraordinary though.

Again in the year 1994, Rahman gave her a new sensational hit for the director Mani Rathnam for the movie Bombay, wherein she sang the song “Halla Gulla". Consecutively, a couple of years later she sang for Ratchagan – another Rahmanic venture where she sang the song “Mercury Pookal" starring Nagurjuna and Sushmita Sen as the lead roles. Her latest hit is the “pappu cant dance" for the movie Jaane tu ya Jaane na starring Imran Khan and Genelia in the lead roles.
