Famous dances of Goa


In this article I have provided informatoin on some famous Goan dances. I have described the Shigmo, Fudgi, dhalo and dekhini dance forms of Goa.

Dance forms of Goa


Goa is a small state situated sandwiched between Karnataka and Maharashtra along the west coast of India. Goa is famous for its various beaches and attracts lot of tourists from all over the world. Unlike most of India, it used to be a Portuguese colon and not a British colony. Dance and music is quite famous in Goa and Goa is known to have its own folk dances and songs which are quite unique. Let us read in detail about some of the important dance forms of Goa.

shigmo dance

Shigmo dance


This dance is performed to celebrate the coming of the spring season. It is a form of naman. (religious ceremony). It is performed in the Hindu community of Goa and is performed in the month of March. Temples are decorated in this time while a festival of the same name, Shigmo and the dance is performed to appease the Gods.

Fugdi dance


This dance doesn't require any special occasion and is performed the year long. fudgi dance
It is a dance performed in the praise of Lord Ganesha. This dance is performed by girls and women folk. It is quite famous because of the energy and the songs. The women sing and dance while performing this dance in various formations. This dance is started slow and the women sing in slow tempo. Gradually the speed of the dance and the song is increased and when the dance reaches it's maximum tempo, the women produce a sound 'foo' instead of singing. Hence the name of the dance became 'Fugdi'.

Dhalo dance


The Dhalo dance is performed by women dressed in colourful sarees. In this dance girls and women form groups intertwining their arms and sing and dance in various manners. It is somewhat similar to the Fudgi dance; however the pace is slow in the Dhalo dance. It is usually performed by a pair of two groups comprising of 12 dancers each facing each other.

Dekhini/Dakhni dance


The word Dekhni means beauty in Konkani. In this dance various women or girls who act as 'devdasis' or servants of God and perform around a lovely woman who is the main character in the dance.dekhini dance
The dance is performed to various percussions and has a story line to the dance. This dance and song has been composed by the Christians who were earlier Hindus. The famous bollywood song ' ghe ghe ghe ghe re, ghe re saiba' from the film 'Bobby' has been influenced by this song and dance form.
