Borail Wildlife Sanctuary


Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the worth visiting places in Assam. The sanctuary is situated in North Cachar and Cachar districts of Assam. The sanctuary is famous for its rich vegetation along with many rare and endangered species of birds and animals. Here is the detail information about the sanctuary.

Borail Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the two southern most district of Assam state in North East India. It is the combination of two reserve forest, North Cachar RF and Borail RF. The sanctuary spread over North cachar and Cachar districts. It covers an area of 326.24 sq. kms. The sanctuary is not only rich in flora and fauna but also provides a picturesque view with the surrounding hills. Apart from these the sanctuary is rich in vegetation which provides it a perfect ecosystem. The place is completely a hilly region with lots of streams scattered here and there.

What to see in Borail


The sanctuary is rich in biodiversity with Tropical Moist Evergreen and semi Evergreen Forest that covers the whole area. The place is very suitable for Orchids as such almost each and every tree in this tropical forest is ornamented by varieties colourful orchids.Besides these one can see thick bamboo forest and wide grassland in this forest. The most commonly found animals are Flying fox, slow Loris, Golden cat, jungle wild dog, Barking Deer, Giant squirrel, Porcupine, Clouded leopard, Leopard, Hoolock Gibbon ,Pigtailed Macaque, Himalayan Black Dear ,Capped Langur , sambar, Fishing cat, etc. Many rare species of reptiles like Rock python ,Red snake, Green Pit viper etc can be seen in this sanctuary. The sanctuary is famous for two endangered species of tortoise-Brown hill tortoise, and Asian Leaf turtle. The commonly found bird species of the sanctuary are white backed vulture, sunder billed Vulture, white checked hill Partridge, Mountain Bamboo Partridge, Khaleej Pheasant, Grey Peacock Pheasant etc.

The ideal time to visit the sanctuary is from October to March. During this time you will get pleasant weather.

How to reach Borail


The nearest airport is Kumbhirgram Airport ( In silchar) which is just 40 kms away from the sanctuary. Bus service is readily available from Guwahati and other major towns of the state.
