Very few residents of Maharashtra are aware that the oldest National Park in the State of Maharashtra is the Tadoba National Park which is located in District Chandrapur, Maharashtra. Together with the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary, it is part of the Tadoba-Andahari Tiger Reserve.

The name Tadoba is acquired from the local God named Taru, while the name Andhari refers to the river by the same name which makes its merry way through the sanctuary. While the Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of more than 500 sq.kms, the Tadoba National Park is spread over 116 sq.kms.

As implied by the name, tigers are the prime attractions at the Tadoba National Park. The tiger is India's national animal and efforts have been made to protect the tiger from becoming extinct. The Tadoba National Park Maharashtra is one of the many national parks which are a haven for this much-poached animal.

Besides tigers, at the Tadoba National Park Maharashtra you can sight sambar, chital, gaur, wild boars, sloth bears and panthers.

In the midst of numerous water bodies in the Tadoba National Park Maharashtra, there are majestic teak trees, plenty of bamboo, and some fruit trees like Jamun, Mango, Arjun, etc.

You must also make a stopover at the Interpretation Centre at Moharli before visiting the Tadoba National Park Maharashtra. It is a good idea, too, to take the nature trails at Moharli and Kolsa. You can even enjoy an elephant ride at the Tadoba National Park!
