Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, one of the most outstanding American Presidents was born in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky on February 12, 1809. At the age of 19, he helped to crew a flat boat that carried farm produce down the Ohio and Mississippi River to New Orleans. Lincoln moved to Decatur, Illinois where he worked for sometime splitting rails for fending. In 1031, he left home and worked in a variety of jobs ranging from flat boat hand to storekeeper. In 1834, Lincoln was elected to Illinois State Legislature and in 1834; he became a lawyer and was elected to the US House of Representative in 1846 where he served one term before returning to Springfield, Illinois to practice law. An outspoken critic of slavery, Lincoln engaged in a series of debates with noted orators and US Senator Stephen Douglas. His oratory made Lincoln nationally prominent. The newly formed Republican Party chose him to run against Douglas for the US Senate seat in 1858 which he lost. Later the Republican chose him as a compromise candidate. On Feb 4, 1861, shortly after Lincoln presumed office, there were problems and Lincoln vowed to go for a war to restore the union.

In a historic Civic Rights move on January 1, 1863, Lincoln promulgated the Emancipation Proclamation Abolishing slavery and through his advocacy two years later on Jan. 31, 1865, it became an amendment to the United States constitutions.

Abraham's dream of an united country was secured. Unfortunately Lincoln himself did not to live to enjoy the fruits of the hard won peace. On April 15, 1865, while watching a performance at Ford's theater in Washington DC, he was assassinated by unemployed actor and confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth. Though he died but he is still alive in the numerous hearts of people.
