History of Tamilnadu



The history of Tamil Nadu is very old and roots of the history takes us thousands of years back. According to the history, Dravidians of Tamilnadu were once a part of the early Indus Valley.They moved to south india around 1500 BC. However, the recorded history of human civilization in Tamil Nadu goes back only to the 4th century BC.

The literature also known as Sangamhas shown references to the social and cultural life of people.With the time, the Tamils developed trade links with ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome.They started trading various goods ,especially spices.

As the Tamilnadu is prime location,every king wanted to make it part pf his empire.Prior to the Christians, the Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas ruled the Tamilnadu. After them others like the Pallavas and the Chalukyas came into power.

This all gave Tamilnadu gift of mixed and great culture to the Tamilnadu.The rich tradition of Tamilnadu literature, Tamilnadu music and Tamilnadu dance, which were so supported by the Tamil rulers,even today they are part of Tamilnadu.


The early Cholas between 1st and 4th centuries ruled Tamil Nadu. The Cholas ruled the present Thanjavur and Tiruchirapalli districts. Almost all the Chola Kings were magnificent Temple sculpturers. Brahadeswarer's Temple in Tanjore is a classical example of the magnificent architecture of the Chola kingdom.


After them ,the Pallavas came into picture and dominated the south for another 400 years. They ruled a large portion of Tamil Nadu with Kanchipuram.
The Cholas again emerged in 9th century under Rajaraja Chola and his son Rajendra Chola.They even won Orissa and parts of West Bengal.

Rajendra Chola extended and won the islands of Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Java, Sumatra, Malaya and the islands of Pegu with his ships.
But in 14th Century, Alauddin Khilji subdued them and destroyed great city like Madurai.

Various wars took place in Tamilnadu includes ,British fought with french and dutch.British fought with Hyder Ali and later his son Tipu Sultan.British then converted all south india under one name MADRAS Presidency.

After independence of India in 1947, the Madras Presidency became Madras State, containing of present day Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Northern Kerala, and the southwest coast of Karnataka.

In 1968 the state of Madras was renamed Tamil Nadu.
