Biography of Sukumar Ray


Sukumar Ray is a man of multiple talents but people of Bengal will remember him for his poems and short stories. He was a humorous as well as satirical poet.

Sukumar Ray was a man of inborn talents. He was born on 30th October, 1887. His father Upendra Kishore Roy Chowdhury was also a man of multi-talents. Sukumar Ray also followed his father footsteps in his professional life and established himself as renowned poets, litterateur, play-wrights, painter, photographer etc. Sukumar Ray graduated in Physics (Hons.) and Chemistry (Hons.) from the Presidency College, Kolkata in 1906. Later he studied printing technology in England and also established himself as spearhead of photography and lithography in India.
But Sukumar Ray's poems, stories and plays affected the people of Bengal most. He was from the genre of "literary nonsense". His humorous and satirical writings are unforgettable. He studied society very closely and understood the clash of modern with the ancient. This clash of modern with the past is portrayed in his poem "Abol Tabol" and "Ha-ja-ba-ra-la". He could felt the change that happening to the society. The language of his writings is very much lucid, simple, modern and easy to understand.
His Works - Abol Tabol , Pagla Dashu , Khai-Khai, Heshoram Hushiyarer Diary, Ha-ja-ba-ra-la, Jhalapala O Onanyo Natok, Lakkhaner Shoktishel , Chalachittachanchari, Shabdakalpadrum, Bohurupee.
Sukumar Ray passed away in 1923 due to Leishmaniasis, an incurable disease of those times. He left behind his only child Satyajit Ray who also turned out to be a great film director, writer and painter in future. This man of great talents who kept us smiling in this sorrow world through his writings will be remembered forever.
