Promoth Chowdhury : Famous Bengali Writer

Promoth Chowdhury was born in 1868 in Haripur village, in Pabna District of Bengal (now in Bangladesh). His had been famous in Bengali Literature in his pen-name "Birbal". He passed Barrister degree and was a law college professor. Later he joined famous Bengali Journal "Sabujpatra" as editor. He even married to Satyendranath Tagore's daughter Indira Devi.
Promoth Chowdhury created his own brand of critics literature. He utilized the journal "Sabujpatrika" to flag off the use of Regular Bengali language in writings. According to his opinion, it will help to take literature to mass population. Even Rabindra Nath Tagore also supported Promoth Chowdhury in his effort. In his writings he used well-supported logic and strong mentality. He also create strong group who started writing in the way of Promoth Chowdhury and portrayed the pure thoughts of the world and life in this way of writings. Beside satire and humour were some of his features of writings.
Sometimes his poems are very much real and rude. His poems had been a surprise package but soul of the poet was absent in those poems. Some of his short stories were very much complex to understood. Thus there are several drawbacks in his writings. But still he remembered mostly as one who bring different taste, idea, language and outlook of Bengali literature. His drawback in poems and story writings was overcome through his Short Essays. He was a freak in Short Essay writings. As he brought up in high class family and study in Europe, which influenced his writings. His writings were straight, logical and contemporary. Some critics felt his writings are 'attacked by paradox'. But still his writings are characterized by intellectual, utmost logical and humorous feelings.

Some of his short stories: Char Yari Katha, Neel-lohit, Aahuta, First class Bhut, Barababur Borodin etc.
This famous personality was passed away in 1946.
