The word "Sunderban" is derived from sundari and ban. The combined ward Sundarban means "the forests of sundari" that is an obvious reference to the large mangrove trees. Sundarban was established as a National Park on May 4, 1984. Sundarban has an area of 1,330 sq km park area and about 2,585 sq km of reserve area. This Sanctuary is situated at a height of 0-10 m above the sea level. The annual Rainfall of this area is about 1,108 mm. The maximum temperature of this area is 42°C in Summer Season and 9.2°C in Winter Season. The Sundarban National Park was designed for Tiger reserve in the year 1973 and after this a wildlife sanctuary was created in the year 1977.

The main attraction of the National park is, it is the biggest Sanctuary of Royal Bengal Tigers in all over the world. Also many birds such as the Kingfisher and White-bellied Sea eagle add a brilliant burst of colour to this Sunderban Crocodilepark. It is also a park of many beautiful animals. Such as spotted deer, boar, monkey, crocodile, python, Salvatore lizards, and a wide range of water birds etc. They are adding a beautiful atmosphere to this Sundarban National Park. Also the Bhagabatpur Crocodile Project is very nearer to this park. So it is one of the most attractions of Sundarban National Park.

There are many facilities for Railway Traveling. From Calcutta there are suburban train to Canning and buses to Namkhana, Raidighi, Sonakhali and Najat from where Motor launch services are available for Sundarbans. So it is also easy to travel through Rail.
