History of Holi Festival
Holi Festival is one of the oldest and Famous festival of West Bengal. The history of Holi Festival is very interesting. It is said that "In past there is a crude king named Hiranyakashyap who wanted to become the most powerful man among the universe and to be worshiped as the God. But his son Prahalad was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu who didn't obey his father. So Hiranyakashyap decided to kill his son. So he called his Sister Holika and ordered her to sit on a fire flame with Prahalad because he knew that his sister has a power that she can't burnt on fire. Holika also did this. But when Lord Bramha gave the power to Holika he had said that if she used it in wrong way then she would burnt in that fire. So Holika was burnt in the huge fire. But Prahalad was the ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. So Lord Vishnu saved Prahalad. From that day the sacrifice of Holika is known as Holi festival and celebrated from that day.Celebration of Holi Festval in West Bengal
In West Bengal this festival is celebrated in much pomp and cheer. In some parts of West Bengal this Holi festival also known as Dol Festival which local name is Dolo Utsav. In this festival the people of West Bengal have collected huge numbers of dry wood sticks. Then they arrange the sticks as a mound of sticks and fire it. This is done commemorate the history and sacrifice of Holika. Also due to burning of woods the atmosphere gets purified and it kills the germs and insects. Then there organized a dance festival of folk dance which is done to cheer and welcome the new season.
In the morning time the people of West Bengal have fun with many types of colours such as Wet colours and dry colours. The wet colours are known as water colours and the dry colours are known as "Aavir" which is as a coloured powder. All age and all types of people have joined this festival and enjoy this holi festival with a great pomp. In the evening many types of Bengali Dishes are prepared. People of West Bengal go every one house and taste the dishes of Holi. The famous Holi recipes of West Bengal are Rossogolla and Malpua which is a sweet dish. In one sentence this Holi festival brings all people and caste in one and increases the brotherhood between the people of West Bengal.
