Aquaculture is concerned with the culture of both fresh water and marine fishes, prawns, crabs, lobsters and shell fishes under controlled conditions using scientific method for maximum productivity.

Aquaculture farms are established with in large numbers both in the east and west of India. Fisheries or fishery science or fishery biology is concerned with the capture, exploitation and utilization of fishes, prawns and other edible aquatic animals.

Pisciculture deals with the culture of fishes, both marine and fresh water, by means of artificial methods using scientific techniques. In Inland fisheries, fishing is done in Inland waters like rivers, lakes, streams, ponds etc.

Fishes captured in natural water bodies are called "capture fishes." Fishes like crab and catfish are cultured in pisciculture in Inland fisheries.

In Estuarine fisheries, fishes are exploited from estuaries. In marine fisheries, marine fishes, prawns, crabs, lobsters and edible oysters are captured for human consumption. Under marine fisheries are included coastal fisheries and deep sea fisheries.
