The first Quake of magnitude 8.9 took place at 2.46pm local time, followed by 19 aftershocks, one as strong as 7.1. Minutes after the quake, tall buildings collapsed in Tokyo and mobile phone networks were crashed. Hundreds of people are trapped in buildings after the series of Quakes. It was nearly 8,000 times stronger than last month's quake in New Zealand that devastated the city of Christchurch, scientists said

The quake affected the Nuclear power plant in Onagawa, but operator, of nuclear power plant Tohoku Electric Power confirmed no radiation leakage, even though a fire erupted in the turbine building. A total of 11 reactors at four nuclear plants were automatically shut down by the quake but no radiation leakage detected since now. But it is confirmed that small amount radioactive material had been released into the air to reduce the pressure inside the plant. But official are sure that the plant wont explode even though cooling systems of the plants are shutdown due to the quakes

Japan has mobilized military troops. 300 planes and 40 ships for the rescue operation, Japan is expecting rescue teams from South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, US aircrafts are already in Japan another one will reach on the way.

One of the worst-hit areas was the port city of Sendai, in Miyagi prefecture were according police 200 to 300 dead bodies were found in one ward alone. A train and ship carrying 100 of people are still missing, official have no trace of both. About 1800 homes were destroyed in city of Minamisoma, Fukushima prefecture and power failure occurred in four million homes surrounding the city. Paddy fields and villages are now under sea-water, it will be difficult for rescuers to get in to these areas.
