For the development of the Hindi language all over India the Dakshina bharat hindi prachar sabha was established in the motive to provide training on the speaking and the reading of the Hindi Language.

As we know Hindi is one of the most important languages in India. It is very much necessary that Hindi language should always be given proper recognition all over India. For this purpose to be fulfilled it is necessary that we need a particular Sabha to promote the value of Hindi language. Spreading of the importance of Hindi was a difficult task in olden days. It is very much necessary that the people should accept one particular language and the national language. In that way Hindi was announced as the national language and it was spread all over India.

To spread Hindi language among the people, Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha was founded in the year 1918 much before our independence by the father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi. He founded at Madras so as to unite the northern and southern part of India by servicing throughout his life time for this institution. Gandhiji wanted south Indians themselves to have a Hindi sabha, so in 1928 he started Dakshina Bharat Hindi prachar sabha and till 1947 he was the president of the Hindi Prachar Sabha. The first Hindi class was started by Sri Devedasa Gandhi during Thiru. Vembuy Anjeneya Sharma's period the sabha was upgraded to the university level.

In 1936 Central Chennai Sabha was divided and the administration was given to the respective regional languages. In the year 1919 Hindi Training Schools were started in Andhra and Tamilnadu. Today the movement can claim more than 7000 workers working in 6000 centres, covering the entire area of the four linguistic regions having their headquarters at Hyderabad (Andhra), Thiruchirapalli (Tamilnadu) yernakulam (Kerala) and Dharwar (Karnataka).The Sabha has also a branch at Delhi. Till 1920, the Sabha had its office at George Town in Madras later they shifted to Mylapore and from there they again shifted to Triplicane where it functioned till 1936.

On October 7th1936 sabha has been shifted to Thyagaraya nagar in Madras which was inaugurated by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who was the president of Indian National congress. From 1922 preliminary examinations were conducted. In the year 1931 first level degree exam Rashtrabasha Visharad was conducted and convocation was held. After Second World War in 1946 Gandhiji presided the silver jubilee function of DBHPS. In his memory Gandhi Mantap was built and was inaugurated on June 1963 by Sri Morarji Desai. In DBHPS two landmarks has been created. First the establishment of National Hindi research library and the other one is the building of Mahatma Gandhi Convocation Hall.

Exams and Courses offered by Dakshina bharat hindi prachar sabha


Hindi exams are conducted two times in a year in around 350 exam centers. Higher exams are generally conducted in Chennai central Sabah and the other exams from Prathmic to Praveshika are taken and conducted by Tamilnadu Sabha. The exams are well organized in the great manner such that there will not be any confusion that occurs during the time of exams. The correction part after the exams is also a tedious process. The papers are taken and are distributed to the pracharaks who are well versed in Hindi and the one who take classes in Hindi. The paper correct is not an easy task like the other paper correction works. There will be necessity for the evaluators to look at each paper more cautious manner.

Apart from Hindi language they teach other regional languages like Tamil, telugu, Malayalam, kannada in higher exams. Sabha branches are developed in 11 cities like Pondicherry, Karaikal, Neyveli, Cuddalore, Salem, Vellore, Coimbatore, Karur, Madurai, Tutocorin & Nagarkoil. Visavath, Pravin, Nisthath, Hindi typewriting, Hindi shorthand are also conducted by Chennai Sabha. Hindi typewriting courses are conducted around in 11 centers in Tamilnadu of which 8 centers are Government aided institutions. From the year 2004-2005 B.A. Course is being introduced by the University Wing of the Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha, Madras.

Services offered by Dakshina bharat Hindi prachar sabha


Hindi Prachar Sabha offers minimum fees for classes from prathmic to pravin during morning and evening hours with necessary study material printed by sabha. For the easy understanding the Hindi magazines which are registered by Government are printed both in Tamil and Hindi by Tamilnadu sabha. They also provide exam answer sheets, necessary books, question papers for the sabha which are printed in press. Courses like M.A., M.Phil, PhD, D.Lit, B.ed, and Post Graduate Diploma in Translation and Journalism Diploma courses (REGULAR) and B.A., M.A., P.G.D.T., M.Phil and PhD courses (Distance Education) are also offered by the Hindi prachar sabha. Also for better understanding sabha helps by providing standard dictionary. Grammar lessons, spoken Hindi are taught through audio cassettes.
